Capacity vs. Throughput: How to Prevent Giant Lines
Short answer: The number on the unit tag is capacity (how many kids can be inside). Field day pain is throughput (how many kids cycle through in an hour). A bounce house that holds 8 kids can still make a 40-minute line if 200 kids are funneled into one entrance.
Prevent the pile-up with more stations, not more of the same unit.
Capacity is a safety number
Capacity exists so toddlers and teenagers are not in the same bag, and so the blower can keep the unit tight. It is not a planning number for 300 kids. If you buy “holds 8” times 40 minutes, you still only moved a few dozen kids.
Throughput is a line number
Throughput goes up when kids enter, play, and exit without a bottleneck at the stairs. A 60-foot obstacle with two lanes moves a line. Four 15×15 bounce houses with one attendant and one entrance do not. They are four copies of the same wait.
Add a station that does not use a blower if you need to dump the overflow: mini golf, games, a foam pad with its own queue. That is why Madisonville Elementary is foam, mini golf, and a 60-foot obstacle over three days, not one combo for the whole school.
Rules we use on Northshore field days

- Split ages. Middle school on the obstacle. Little kids on a toddler unit. Mixed ages in one combo is how someone gets hurt and the line stops.
- One adult per station, not one PTA parent for six units.
- Don’t put the food line in the inflatable queue.

A simple test before you sign the quote
Draw the field. Put an arrow for each line. If every arrow points at the same bounce house, you don’t have a field day. You have a wait.
